Should I choose a loan or investment?

Should I choose a loan or investment?: practical guidance and resources for entrepreneurs in India.

A loan creates repayment obligations; equity investment exchanges a share of ownership for capital. The right choice depends on your cash flow, control preferences and plans, not just the amount available.

Compare the commitments

With a loan, ask whether the business can make repayments even when sales are delayed. Compare interest, fees, security and the full repayment schedule. A cash forecast can help you test the burden.

An equity investor may share in future value and expect significant growth, information rights or a route to exit. Founders can own a smaller share after an investment. Ask what decision rights and milestones are proposed, and take independent professional advice before signing. See private investment guidance for more detail.

Match finance to the business

A local shop seeking equipment may prefer a manageable loan if it can support the repayments. A venture seeking rapid expansion may consider equity if its founders accept the investor's terms. Neither option is automatically suitable: compare alternatives, including a smaller initial purchase or funding from sales, and use the application checklist. Do not assume a grant or investment is guaranteed.
